Ricky throws a terrible temper tantrum when Lucy purchases another new hat. She swears he will lose his temper before she buys another hat. The bet: $49.50, cost of the hat.
When Lucy returns the headdress to the Jeri Hat Salon, clerk Mrs. Mulford interests her in a new chapeau ("a turquoise cocktail hat with little pearls"), which Lucy promptly purchases. Now she has to get Ricky to blow his Latin top before the new hat is delivered the next day.
Lucy tries everything to provoke her husband, but nothing makes the Cuban lose his composure. She even resorts to a "trick" drinking glass, but when Ricky ends up with tomato juice on his white tuxedo, he only comments, "It's a lovely shade of red."
Next, agent Morris Williams starts dickering with Ricky over the performing fee of his client, ventriloquist Sir Hume. The agent requests five hundred dollars; Ricky calmly offers two hundred. Suddenly, Ricky realizes he accomplishes more by remaining calm and calls off the wager with Lucy, generously offering to buy her a new hat. Seconds later, Lucy's jeweled chapeau arrives by messenger, and Ricky realizes he actually won the bet.
Special Notes: The ventriloquist's lips are moving as his agent negotiates his salary.
Bloopers: Lucy pronounces tomato in the more sophisticated way, to-MAH-to then quickly repeats it as to-MAY-to, the more common pronunciation one would expect.
