After Fred demonstrates his magic prowess with a set of trick handcuffs, Lucy snaps a similar pair on Ricky and herself, in an effort to persuade her husband to stay home that night instead of attending a TV show rehearsal.
Much to their mutual horror, they discover the manacles date back to Civil War times (Fred got them at a police benefit in 1919) and no keys exist to open them. Ricky is furious when he realized he will miss the important rehearsal.
The pair's efforts to sleep while still cuffed together are a delight. The next morning, a locksmith, Mr. Walters, arrives with an impressive collection of keys, but none will open the contraption. He knows he has the key at home, but that's in Yonkers, over two hours away.
Ricky is panicky, his television show, live from Television Center, Studio A, is only a few hours away. He tells the locksmith to meet him at the studio with the promised key. Still shackled to Lucy, Ricky appears on the "Guest Stars" TV show. With Lucy's right arm acting as his own, Ricky manages to answer questions put to him by the show's hostess/emcee.
Lucy's hammy antics are priceless and continue throughout Ricky's song. Finally Mr. Walters arrives and frees the couple just in time for Ricky's bows.
Special Notes: Director Marc Daniels worked out these handcuff routines with his wife (and "I Love Lucy" camera coordinator), Emily, before instructing Lucille and Desi. This episode is based on lucy's radio show, My Favorite Husband, Episode #69, "Liz and George Handcuffed".
Bloopers: Ricky took off his neck tie while undressing for bed while handcuffed to Lucy, but the next morning, Ricky's neck tie is back around his neck.
