The Gossip

I Love Lucy

When Lucy is forbidden to gossip, she tapes her mouth shut and, in charades, acts out the latest bit of news for Ethel "about Betty and her husband, Jack." Ricky is disappointed that she didn't keep her word, but at the same time feeds Fred a juicy tidbit "about Joe, the trombone player, and what a wolf he is."

Finally, the boys bet the girls they can keep from gossiping longer. The winners are to be served breakfast in bed for a month. Ricky has a surefire plan: "He'll talk in his sleep, making up a tantalizing tale about neighbor Grace Foster and the milkman; Lucy is sure to spill it to Ethel.

The following day, Lucy blurts out the news to Ethel while Ricky and Fred are listening through the furnace pipes, the snooper's friend. Fred: "Ethel, this is your conscience. You've been gossiping." Lucy: "Ethel, you have the loudest conscience I have ever heard." Ricky: "Lucy Ricardo, you've been gossipin' too." Lucy: "Oh, fine. Mine has an accent."

The next scene depicts Lucy serving breakfast to Ricky, with Ethel performing the same deed for Fred. Suddenly, the milkman rushes into the Ricardo bedroom, followed by Grace Foster's husband, Bill, who is wielding a pistol. The gossip was true after all, and Ricky spilled it first.

Seems the tables are turned, so the boys reluctantly head for the kitchen. With Ricky and Fred out of earshot, Lucy thrusts ten dollars into the milkman's hand with instructions to split the dough with Mr. Foster for their brilliant performance.

Special Notes: This episode is based on lucy's radio show, My Favorite Husband, Episode #96, "Gossip".

Bloopers: When Fred brings up the breakfast to take to the Ricardo's bedroom, he mentioned that he had just come from cooking downstairs, but the breakfast he brings up is in the Ricardo's china. It is the same china that the Ricardo's have for most of the series and it matches completely the set that Lucy has in the other bed. If Fred had really gone to bring up breakfast from his kitchen it would have come on different china.
