I Love Lucy

Fred's birthday is approaching and the Ricardos decide to buy him a custom made tweed suit as a surprise. Lucy sneaks into the Mertz apartment to borrow one of Fred's old suits (to serve as a model), but Mrs. Trumbull, unaware of Lucy's true intentions, sees her and tells Ethel.

Because of a robbery scare in the neighborhood involving a "Madame X," Ethel immediately jumps to the conclusion that Lucy is the theif. But when Lucy spies Ethel, wearing Fred's hat and coat, lingering on her fire escape, she assumes that Ethel is the robber.

After a funny scene involving fingerprints on Ricky's silver cigarette case, Lucy decides to play a trick on Ethel, hoping to expose her as Madame X. She tells her friend she's going out for the evening, but instead hides behind a chair in the living room, fully expecting Ethel to break in.

However, the real Madame X appears, although Lucy doesn't know it, and a struggle ensues. The noise summons Ethel, and Lucy suddenly realizes she's made a mistake.

Special Notes: The night this episode aired, Desi threw a surprise thirteenth wedding anniversary party for Lucy at Mocambo. In the midst of the celebration, a TV set was rolled in and the guests enjoyed the show.

Bloopers: Lucy makes a rare blooper in this episode. While looking for the cigarette case she first says 'silfer', then in the next breath corrects herself with 'silver'. By this point in the series, the Ricardos had moved from the 4th floor down to the third floor, to apartment 3B (which was later changed to 3D), which was next door to the Mertzes. Yet Ethel, upon leaving the Ricardos' apartment with Fred, said they "might come up later."
