I Love Lucy

Overweight and feeling "dauncey," Lucy decides to see her doctor for a checkup. Ethel: "You don't suppose you're going to have a baby." Lucy is incredulous, but sure enough the tests are positive. After eleven years of marriage, the Ricardos are expecting their first child.

Lucy has dreamed "a million times" about this event, breaking the news to Ricky. Her first attempt is at lunch, but, alas, Senor Ricardo is in a bad mood: "Sometimes I think I go back to Cuba and work on a sugar plantation." Next, she journeys to the Tropicana, but with all the onlookers present, Lucy finds it impossible to discuss such a personal matter.

In the meantime, Fred and Ethel are absolutely overwhelmed with the idea that they'll be the baby's godparents. In fact, Fred already has purchased a baseball bat, glove, cap, and ball for "little Freddie." Lucy, however, is desperate; she must tell the father-to-be as soon as possible or "wait and let the baby tell him."

At the club that night, Lucy slips a note to the headwaiter during Ricky's "The Lady in Red" number. Not knowing it was penned by Lucy, Ricky reads it aloud to the audience: "My husband and I are going to have a blessed event and I just found out today. I've heard you sing "We're Having a Baby." Would you sing it for us?" He obliges first by singing "Rock-a-bye Baby" and in the midst of the number, in a wonderfully sentimental scene, discovers that it was Lucy who wrote the note.

Thereupon he sings "We're Having a Baby" to Lucy and the two parents-to-be are awash in tears.

Special Notes: Desi Arnaz accidentally flubbed the "Rock-a-bye Baby" song when Lucy confirmed being pregnant. They were originally going to do another take, but because Desi and Lucy's reactions were so natural they decided to leave it alone.

Bloopers: If you look carefully at the beginning, Lucy is reading Mcall's Magazine, and "I Love Lucy" is on the cover. Not only that, but the cover is also falling off!
